Storing your Boat

There are two general categories for storage: commercial storage away from your home or property; storing your boat at home. There are a few basic things that should be considered with either option. For more on how to store your new boat, go to www.boating.cooloolabusiness.com. Also, check out these tips.

What should I look for in a storage facility?

Generally, you should find a storage site that is secure and well lit, with strict security control such as keypad entry. Most of these commercial sites charge by the foot, so the cost will depend on the size of the boat/trailer etc. Most reputable commercial storage sites guarantee your space, which means that you can take your boat or vehicle out and can be assured that the same spot is there when you get back.

Is it expensive?

Storing a boat can be costly. As part of your original boat-buying planning sessions, figure on putting some money away each month to cover the costs of storage and yearly maintenance. You may have to pay $500 or more for "dry" storage close to the water for an average boat. Of course, the larger the boat, the more expensive the off-season storage will be.

Why can’t I store my boat at home?

Usually you can do this, to save money. But some communities will not allow you to park/store your boat and trailer on your property unless it is in the back and not easily seen from the main street in front of your home. Others may discourage you from having the boat and trailer on your property unless it is in an approved storage building or garage.

What if I live in a cold climate?

New owners should not to forget about winterization. This can be a critical element of boat ownership if you live in a part of the world where winter could mean trouble for the engine in your prize boat. Look carefully at what it takes to winterize a boat engine and plan to spend from $100 to $300. Talk with the retailer where you bought your boat and ask a lot of questions. Remember that boat and engine warranties are only good if you follow instructions.
