What about a top-of-the-line ski boat?

A new 20-foot ski boat that seats eight, with a 320 horsepower engine, will generally cost about $38,000. This price may not include the trailer and other necessary items, but be sure this is understood and in writing before you sign any papers and take the boat home. Options might include a CD player/stereo, flush kit and swim platform.

Valuable lessons

Many people have gotten in over their heads when buying an expensive ski boat or other pleasure boat. Before deciding to spend $1,000 or $100,000, families shopping for a boat should ask a lot of questions when talking to friends, family and boat suppliers. With some of these questions answered, you can decide how much you are willing to spend to make this vision a reality. Be sure to include all the licenses, insurance, storage cost and so on when you are figuring the cost.

Going with something a bit smaller

Smaller boats can come with an open deck/floor, have a convertible top and are sold separately from the outboard motor. Boats in this category are generally from 15 feet to 20 feet in length. With the correct size outboard motor these smaller craft are excellent for pulling kids on the inner tube and will even provide plenty of power for a single skier. Prices might be in the $2,000 to $6,000 range for the boat.

Buy a good trailer

A suitable trailer might cost another $1,000 to $1,200, though they are available for less. Excellent choices are available with the combined fish/ski boat. Tip: Don't buy unless you get a written warranty on the boat and trailer.
